The Distinguished Gentlemen of Spoken Word (DGSW) is a performance arts-based program that uses poetry to develop positive personal and social outcomes for the young men in the troupe. The benefits of this art form include the development of literacy skills, positive self-identity, confidence in self, and fraternal relationships. Junior, Isaiah Lucky is part of this fine organization, and has performed recently at Beaumont School in Cleveland Heights, in celebration of Black History Month.
In Isaiah’s words, “The Distinguished Gentlemen of Spoken Word is a group ages 9-21 who study the art of poetry through spoken word, poetry and the performing arts. The Distinguished Gentlemen, led by founder and director, Ms. Honey Bell-Bey, has performed poetry by Langston Hughes, Shakespeare, Paul Lawrence Dunbar, etc. and has also written and performed original pieces of poetry.
The troupe has appeared in the Plain Dealer, performed around Cleveland, in churches, halftime shows at the Cleveland Cavilers games, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, The Paramount Theater in Anderson, Indiana, and has even performed in Paris, France, for Dr. Bernice King, the youngest child of the late great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.!”
Congratulations Isaiah for being a Benedictine Champion in school and in our community!
